“Rich” Is Not a Career

ok i’m over my Obama high.  now back to business.

A while back, I was watching that show “I Want to Work for Diddy” when I made an observation about the contestants.

OK, OK maybe its just me but before I go any further, I feel the need to explain exactly why I was watching I want To Work For Diddy.  Its almost like Housewives.  You know those shows that you like to watch so you can just complain how bad they are?  Its like the Maury paternity shows—you watch and shake your head in disgust, but you watch. Plus it gives me great material to write about.  BUT I can only get through a few episodes of these shows before I lose interest and it becomes too bad, even for me.

Anyway, much like the beginning of every reality show that involves trying to get a job with some celebrity, the show begins with the various candidates explaining why they want to work for Diddy.  One guy said that from the time he was a child he knew he wanted to be rich.  He didn’t know how he was going to do it, but he wanted to be rich.  And everyone’s aspirations were similar in that regard.  They wanted to be successful, working for Diddy would open doors for them, or they wanted to be in the entertainment business and this was a way to do it.  Sure, these reasons sound very benign on the surface but upon closer examination it reveals a major flaw that has developed in the American Dream.

None of the candidates had a particular CAREER they were interested in.  None of them had a position that they had their eye on.  None of them had been working since an early age towards a specific goal.  They didnt see this show as a stepping stone on a path towards their aspirations.  The show WAS their aspiration.

These folks saw this show as a “shortcut” on the road to success.  We live in this American Idol paradigm of success.  Forget interning, working for free and doing grunt work.  Forget working hard, setting goals and planning out a path for your life.  We’ve reduced success to “a big break.”  That one thing that comes along and changes everything.

I hear so many young people who, when asked what they want to do with their lives, respond “I want to be in the entertainment business.”  What exactly does that mean?  “I want to be a mogul and own a lot of companies.”  “I want to be rich.”  Yet, when pressed about specifics, they really have no clue as to what they want or how they propose to get it.

Being a multi-media mogul is a fantastic goal however, regardless of what it may seem like on TV, it just doesn’t happen.  You don’t win it on a show.  You don’t stumble upon it.  It doesn’t happen by accident.  So many of our younger generation seems to think that success is just something that just happens to them.  The result of a lucky alignment of the stars.  Any moment something will happen hat changes everything.  And for that reason, so many young people grow up with dreams but no plan.

You never hear someone say, I plan to go to college, get an MBA and then start my own company managing talent.  THAT’S a goal, that’s a career, that’s a plan.

Even if you want to be a barber or stylist and open up a shop, get a business plan, learn something about the biz you are going into before you open a shop or store.  Whether its a hair salon, clothing store, or restaurant, Im so tired of seeing small businesses open in the community only to clothes a few months later because no one knew what the hell they were doing.  You know the restaurant that never has shit, the corner store that is always out of everything and the prices are twice the market average and the cleaners that open whenever they feel like it.  And then want to complain about how noone supports your business.  Maybe its because your business is some bullshit.

If you dont know what you’re doing,  work with someone who does.  Your cousin from the post office is not a business manager.  Get a solid business plan, perfect your craft and take advice.  Success never just happens.

I meet so many people who have no direction for their lives, no real goals, no real strategy.  Its like many of us just wait for something to happen to us.  Just like you cant just start a business and pray people patronize it, you cant just go through life thinking riches are going to fall out of the sky.

Now don’t get me wrong many of us aren’t quite sure what we want to do. I certainly took a long time finding myself and still don’t know if I’ve found me yet.  However, I positioned myself so when I did finally decide what I wanted to do, I would be well prepared.  Education is the key to excelling no matter what field you want to enter.  And it doenst always have to be higher education.  Having an apprenticeship, internship, continuing education class or simply a mentor can prepare you to enter a career with something more than dreams of success.

For example, although Im still waiting for Denzel Washington to sweep my off my feet, I still signed up for E-Harmony just in case.  Get it?

You can’t work towards a goal if you don’t have one.  We spend more time positioning ourselves for the sudden break, than we do getting educated, interning, learning the field, working hard and paying dues.  Dues?  This generation has no concept of dues. As much of an annoying narcissist as he is, Puffy paid his dues.  He started as an intern and worked his way up, learning the business inside out on the way.  As sickeningly perfect as Beyonce is, she had to bust her ass on the chitlin circuit and work extremely hard for a long time before she “made it”.  All the while she is perfecting her craft.  There was no American Idol to insure instant fame, there was no reality show to make stars out of thin air.

But we are so inundated with this Soulja Boy, reality TV, American Idol paradigm of success that we forget how most of the people at the very top really got there.  By knowing what they wanted and working their asses off to get it.

So the next time you hear that dreaded phrase, “I want to be in the entertainment industry” ask what that means? Do you want to be a costume designer, actress, make up artist, director of photography, stylist, set designer, agent, A & R or what?  Next time you hear “I want to be a mogul.”  Ask, well what does hat mean exactly and what are you doing to train yourself to enter the business world?  Next time you hear “I just want to be rich.”  Ask, how do you plan on getting rich and what steps are you taking toward that plan?  Being on “Cribs” is not a career plan, designing them is.  You cant work towards a goal if you don’t have one.

Only when you identify a field, positon, career you are interested in, can you start to design and implement a plan for your life.  There’s nothing wrong with dreaming.  But dreams coupled with inaction virtually guarantees that your dreams will remain just that.  Dreams.

And when all you have are dreams and no plan, you begin to do things to substitute for those dreams coming true.  Like buying a house you cant afford, like racking up credit card debt.  If you haven’t realized all those dreams you’ve had, at least you can look like you have.  A big house and fancy cars should not be goals, they should be the result of you having reached your goals.

So lets challenge each other to dream big, but also plan big and act big.  Although the media makes us think that success is easy, that its something that just falls out of the sky, nothing can be further from the truth.  Whatever stage of life you are in, you should always have a plan for success. And in this global age it is more important than ever that we encourage our young people to have a plans and goals for their careers.  Even if they change 10 times, at least they are making forward progress and not just mired in a bunch of useless dreams of big cars and big houses and fancy clothes.  As so many of those with bad ARM loans know, a house can be taken from you.   Education and skills and a plan for success are forever.

What happens to a dream deferred?  I don’t know and I’m not trying to find out.

Peace people.

    Good entry. :-)

I work with teenagers, and many of the things you mentioned apply to them. Get rich quick, but how? They don’t even realize that there really isn’t a such thing. Whether one goes on to higher education or not, hard work MUST be put in, in order to get where one wants to go.

WOW! I can really relate to you on this one Jam… Everyone wants the reward, but few even understand that there is a price to pay and “Hope” is not a plan. I have been fortunate (through the Grace of God and More Hard Work than most would imagine to do) to have create a moderate level of success for myself.

Something that I can attest is that everyone tells me how much they want the things I have - but when I tell them how they can do it too (ie: the work); they don’t even take the first step.

If you follow the careers of the people that many try to mimic, they only look at them now - but, forget to look at the dues paid (even celebrities have to pay dues):

Tupac got his start lugging the record carts for Digital Underground

J-Lo was an unknown dancer that worked for quite a while before being in the background of a little show called “In Living Color”

I could go on and on about celebrities and CEOs that started in the mailroom…

Success is not an overnight thing - - unfortunately, most people forget that there was an entire night (the unseen work) that preceded the sunshine of the day (fortune and fame)

I’ve been preaching this to my sons for the past 4 months. I’m going to print this article so they can read it and understand, ITS NOT JUST MOM who feels this way.

This is the truth and the light. Preach Jam, Preach!

I don’t know Jam. I think I just want to be rich. After all these years at the firm, I feel entitled to my paycheck and get an attitude when I have to do real work. :) I never understood the appeal of lottery but it’s coming to me now.

But since you’re wiser than me, let me go back to mixing that song I was working on last night.

I’ve been preaching this to my nephew for over a year. His ultimate dream is to be, you guessed it, in “the music business.” He rolls his eyes and looks at me blankly when I give him my education lecture.

He just can’t see how an education (a GED) could possibly help him in life. I know I didn’t exactly have a laser life focus as a kid but he really worries me sometime.

I asked one of my teenagers (please see my initial post) if she expected life to be easy for her and without hesitation she said yes. I laughed at her and said that she’s got something coming to her if she really believes that.

Just thought I’d add that tidbit for humor’s sake.

it reminds me of those stories of girls who show up in los angeles looking for where they hire movie stars. most of those girls end up in porn.

i saw a poll when they asked high school kids what they wanted in life their answer was “to be famous.” no plan. just fame. my fiance’s twenty-one year old sister is no better. myspace is like her own little reality show (as are the millions who post useless videos of themselves on youtube).

what used to be the american dream that you worked for people now assume is a right their entitled to.

and jam, i have wanted to be a screenwriter since i was ten and saw RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. i have written nine screenplays practicing my craft, i write a blog to keep my skills honed. someday i would love to be paid to write anything. when i think i am ready, i’ll show someone.

    Jam,

I missed you, but like always your commentary was RIGHT ON POINT! How the hell do you do it gettin’ all up in my head like that. I too am drawn to the train wrecks that are what’s known as reality tv and am also sucked in as I shake my head, grab the phone and talk about the ridiculousness that’s on the tube. That said, I think this generation young and too damn old and SHOULD know better have concocted the notion of the microwave millionaire. No prep, no crockpot or slowcook, no preheating the oven, just nuke for a few secs and ding! ready.
And although the elction process is over, thank ya Jesus~hallelujah, there were tense moments where sub-par standards were on the brink of victory. I’m certain you like all of us saw the side by side comparisons of the 2 major tickets and although the true steady hand won the race nearly 50 MILLION people voted for mediocrity! (the hell) Anyway, I’m more encouraged than ever that this line of thinking will soon come to pass and hardwork, patience and truly doing ones best work will be the norm.

Now, if we can just find a way to bring the rising unemployment rate down like the gas prices, stabilize the economy, slow down global warming, save the rainforest…..

I completely agree with what you wrote.Very strong and a wake-up call to anyone who may read it. Sometimes people get intimidated when they think about their future and how long it may take to achieve their goals, but through my personal experience I suggest that people should just take each step at a time. Each step that we take may open a door to a path that never crossed our mind.

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

  14. Jefferson Sergeant on 02 Dec 2008 at 3:42 am #

While I agree with Jam’s sentiments I don’t think the situation is that cut and dry.

For people 25 and younger they have been growing up in an America where mass firings/Layoffs have become the norm. The idea of a life-long career has become something of the past in this day and age.

Related to this is also the fact that many well educated people are the ones who are caught up in these massive turnovers as well. I can see how this reality could negate the pre-eminence of education in their mind.

The ability to change career paths is also something that hes been cited as a reason for diminished focus. In the past you pretty much knew what you wanted to do and that would most likely be your job for the rest of your life. Kids today can start off with one job, go to internetuniversity.com and be qualified to do something else in no time.

I think the aforementioned realities has caused the idea of instant fame and riches to be magnified.

I know I’m late coming in on this one, but since you admitted to watching I Want to Work for Diddy, I’ll admit some strange addiction to watching My Super Sweet 16. I can’t explain it because it really gets me angry but yet, I’ll stop on the channel when I see it’s on.

How does it relate? Well, the show is centered around these children whose parents in most cases worked hard and long to make large quantities of money. Yet, they don’t feel the need to pass any of the work ethic on to their children. At the small end of the scale, they’ve shown CeeLo’s daughter (I vowed not to put any more money in their pockets after watching the ignorance) and Spinderella. Then we’ve had Gerald Levert laughing about the fact that things were so different when he was young & Andre Harrell who made a point of yelling at the party planner when his son kept waiting.

At least Diddy was teaching them some skills that they could perhaps use when they did decide on what they wanted. hmmmmmmm……….

Though to be fair given how education is falsely sold as an economically panacea, we just need to be more upfront and tell the youth to at least do well enough to graduate high school rather than assume they’re great enough to go to college and potentially risk going into debt over some student loans because they either took classes they didn’t excel at or had bad teachers.

Personally I look at it as an athlete: if you got the opening, take it once you graduate high school. If not, go until you reached your limit of what you can tolerate/afford (dropping out when one has honestly tried their best shouldn’t be taboo, but then school has its own methods of conditioning one could look up online, like dress codes or grades=intelligence through written in stone, obsolete, boring, book smarts rather than learning about the person’s mental agility for a learning curve for critical thinking from applying new information). Then of course finding that opening with high unemployment also hurts too due to being under/overqualified, potentially putting college as more wasted money when it doesn’t pay off and you need that short term because you don’t know if you will have a long term.

Ah well, guess I can’t agree with everything, especially considering I feel I regret graduating and taking philosophy in college as it didn’t teach me with how to operate with people in ways to deescalate a confrontation because I thought a little too much rather than accidentally create an explosion by accidentally undermining them. Would’ve been nice to know the cardinal rule of philosophy: a debate is useless to an opponent who doesn’t apply what you are telling him or her.

I also hate being taught of the whole concept of work as a form of a choice when it’s really wage slavery given the phrase of “human resources”, since you don’t know who your employer (if you’re not lucky enough to be a high roller/self-employed) will undercut you with. Plus it only makes men more insecure when the economy crashes on them rather than find better alternatives and knowing they may need help at times too rather than have a self-inflicting macho bravado.
