Ordered the book for the library where I am employed. I’ve read through it and anxiously wait for it to be processed. I agree with so much of what you say and I really try to make a difference in the students that I work with. I am a librarian at a small community college in Northwest Mississippi and a lot of our youth need someone to intercede. Thank you for your courage to say waht so many of think. I stand behind you and I’m stepping out to do what I can too!

Sister this is a great book. You have managed to be extremely candid but yet give information. I am glad I came across your work while strolling through the bookstore.

    Congratulations on the book, JAM!

I just heard about the book and your appearance in EBONY on the Hudlin Forum.

A return to TV with a weekly show is the next step.

    Jam,

Before I give compliments, one question: in chapter 2, there’s a passage about a neighbor that was complacent, dropped out of school, and you offered to foot the bill but it didn’t pan out. Somewhere on this blog, I could swear that I read the same story, only this time it was your cousin (from Detroit?). Am I mistaken? And if not, where’s the disconnect?

  13. jam donaldsonNo Gravatar on 25 Feb 2010 at 2:16 pm #

First, thank you for reading the book. The answer is that the person is relatively close to me so i am doing my best to hide his identity so he wont be embarrassed. (or sue me) :-)

  14. THERREN DUNHAMNo Gravatar on 25 Feb 2010 at 3:20 pm #

No, THANK YOU for spreading your message.

I know you read these posts, and I know you’ve seen that I am somewhat critical at times (though I gladly leave myself open for rebuke, so you know), but I DO support what you’re doing and I stress the importance of these sites to the people I share them with. We may not see eye-to-eye on everything, but every voice is important and yours is one that must be heard.

This is why I’m proud to say that I bought your book when it dropped, and I’m proud to have bought some of your shirts (much love to your staff who worked with me to get my order right–the lady I spoke with was mad beautiful and courteous with me, and I appreciate that SO MUCH!); you can bet I’m getting the whole set.

I will always support your efforts, with my words, deeds, and my money. That’s not ass-kissing; it’s a reflection of some fundamental beliefs that need not be mentioned (brevity isn’t my strong suit, if you’ve noticed). Keep doing what you do, and keep allowing me to play the loyal, annoying opposition at times, and I think we can all make the collective black experience so much greater.

    You are appreciated greatly.

    LMBAO!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, is it really like that? Have you even read the crap I put out here? I mean, really, I don’t always agree with every little point in the blogs (or the book–next time, more original essays, less reliance on what you’ve already written. You know, that Tyler Perry thing ;-D), it is a WONDERFUL BOOK. And besides, y’all just mad because your cyber-crush with her is unrequited. LOL, just playin’.

Jam, your book is fabulous!! It is one of the best books I’ve read in awhile. I KNOW exactly what you are talking about in so many scenarios because I’ve either lived it or seen it. I love your alter egos because I know how it feels to be conflicted by your thoughts. On one hand I want to sympathize with our people on the other hand I want to say get off your ass and do something (anything) to better your circumstances!! Great read.

I must say that I love this book. I’m a student working to obtain my MA in Social Justice and was at Borders studying when I found it. I ended up reading it all in one 4-hour session over coffee and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Being in this field, I have witnessed a lot of poverty and structural violence in the black community. I’m constantly caught in the tension of wanting the people who I help escape from a constant bombard of victimization and “woe is me” mindframe, while still fighting against institutional injustices that I know affect them indirectly. I needed this book in that it articulated both sides of this tension, especially in the discussion on the burden of the Talented Tenth.
I won’t say that the book is perfect. There are clearly some arguments that are just downright classist and judgemental. Although, your strength lies in the delivery especially in the duality of jam the negro vs. jam the american, which I found hilarious.
I think I’ve given the HGM site 2 looks since it first popped on the scene, but I’m glad that this site is dedicated to some of the themes of the book and hopefully will spark good convo.

    Thanks,
    E

    Jam,
I just finished reading your book and I want to thank you for writing it! You must have been reading my mind when you wrote it because I agree with EVERYTHING in it. There are so many people in the community who are afraid of saying the things you wrote about. Like you, I am sick of the excuses and mentality that “we don’t know any better” because it’s not true. Your book is a breath of fresh air, direct and to the point. The sad part is that the people who need to read it, probably won’t. MB

If only this book was a required reading in the school systems. This book is EXACTLY what’s needed to wake our people up to how we are destroying ourselves from within. Thank you again, Jam. Job well done!!
